Choosing foods that you actually enjoy is a crucial part of eating more healthfully. If you don’t like what you’re eating, you’ll eventually find an excuse to fall off the wagon, right? Sometimes it just takes a little modification to make an old favorite healthier and more enjoyable.
I’m officially giving you an excuse to play with your food — create new dishes, try new things, and make adjustments to lighten or spice up your recipes. If you think outside the box, you’ll find foods you love while staying totally healthy.
Here are some food makeover ideas that some of my Make the Change – Be the Change challengers shared on my blog:
* “I have been craving my mom’s rice pudding. So, I swapped out the heavy cream for coconut creamer, the whole milk for coconut milk, the white rice for brown rice, and the sugar for stevia. I also used orgainc eggs rather than conventional eggs. It tastes just as good, if not better!”
* “I make a mean Veggie lasagna. I use spaghetti squash, zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, whole-wheat or artichoke noodles, and light on the cheese. All good and organic grown thanks to our local coop!”
* “I switched up my husband’s favorite meatloaf when I noticed that the bread crumbs, ketchup and BBQ sauce all had High Fructose Corn Syrup. I bought organic beef from an Amish Farmer’s Market, used oatmeal, organic eggs and all-natural ketchup and BBQ sauce.”
* “I made a healthier version of pizza using your recipe from Master Your Metabolism. However, my 5 year old and I made our own whole-wheat pizza crust. I was in absolute heaven and so was she! Fabulous recipe using olive oil, wheat germ, honey, whole-wheat flour, yeast and water. We even had great fun getting sticky, gooey and playing pizza chef for the evening! :)”
