Summer is finally here and that means amazing fun spots open up, like Valleyfair in Shakopee, MN. Valleyfair has been one of my favorite places since the first visit back when I was a kid. I am roller coaster crazy and Valleyfair has some of the best I have ever been on, and I have been on a lot! But, this trip wasn’t all about coasters, it was about food because I was lucky enough to be asked to cover the Valleyfair Food Truck Festival which featured some on the Twin Cities best eats.
While there was a nice variety of food trucks, I only have one stomach and so couldn’t try it all. But, the ones I did try.. YUM!! Trucks like Cave Cafe, Don CHillo’s Tacos, FilFillah, Taste of Valleyfair, MinneapplePie, Bubba’s Fried Chicken, Coras Food Truck, El Chilo, and a few others. It was hard to pick where to start. Me, I wanted to go for the dessert right away, but hubby made us go for taco’s.
We picked El Chilo first. Taco’s sounded good, and like a “lighter” food to start with. Taking a look at the menu, and me being a very picky eater I went with just a regular Pollo taco (Chicken). But, hubby felt a bit adventurous so he picked the Lengua (beef tongue) one. Yikes.. that is daring in my book.
They look good, right? Well they were. The one I had was just chicken, lettuce and cheese (cuz I am picky). The chicken didn’t have much flavor, but yet enough to know there was a different type of seasoning on it. My taste buds must have liked it, as I ate the whole thing in minutes. The beef tongue, hubby said, was ok. Not much seasoning, and the meat has a different texture. He knew I wouldn’t have liked it, but he did manage to eat the whole taco. So, truck one was a hit!
Next I just had to get me some tots. I love Tater Tots and I had spotted Cora’s Best Wings & More truck the minute we got there. Even though they had a lot on their menu, the tots just had to be mine!! They were covered in bacon and cheese. Now, all I can say is if you don’t like tots, bacon, and cheese.. you need help!! LOL! Drooling and shoving these in my face was all I could do. Yes, I did share with hubby.. a few!
Even though the first two treats made my tummy start to feel pretty full, I just couldn’t stop. I was here on a mission, to leave hurting! But, I needed to take a few minutes to let my food rest, so gave hubby the fun sample card we got and sent him on his way. The cards they had were for 5 samples. Each food truck had the list of items they offered and how many tickets you had to use for them. Most were 1 or 2 tickets per item. The items were not “samples” but yet full servings. The cards were very reasonably priced at just $26 plus tax.
Hubby headed over to Bubba’s Fried Chicken. He had been eyeballing that food truck from the first moment we got there. He loves his friend chicken. He came back with a combo of 3 pieces of fried chicken, jo-jo’s and some collard greens. He loved the chicken, but the collard greens were not his thing.
The owner of the truck and one of the staff posed for a picture for hubby. They were so friendly and seemed to love their jobs.
One stand that caught my attention when we were walking around was the FilFillah. I have never been into Gyro’s or Greek foods so even though the truck caught my attention I was hesitant to try anything. I seen the words, Baklava, on the menu and have heard that word but didn’t know what it was. So, walked up to the truck and asked.
Boy was I glad I did. Baklava is a phyllo dough, butter, cinnamon, sugar and chopped nuts. In this case, chopped pistachio nuts were used. Though the smell was heavenly, I am a “looks” person too and if a food doesn’t look good I am always a bit hesitant. This just didn’t look the most appetizing, but I put aside my issues and took a bit. OH MY !!!! I was in Baklava heaven!! This is the most amazing little dessert I have ever tried. While I love many desserts, I cannot believe I never tried this before. I am so in love, I am actually going to try my hand at making it myself. This is seriously heaven. I wanted more but had to leave room for other goodies. YUM!!
The last stop on my food truck feasting was the Minneapplepie stand. It is the original, 100% deep fried goodness. This was a pie, but looked like a hot pocket, deep fried and served with your choice of vanilla or cinnamon ice cream. we got a scoop of each ice cream and have to say.. the cinnamon won our vote. It was so good and I am a cinnamon lover so it to me was perfectly done. The deep fried pie was the best apple pie I have ever had!! I actually had to go chat with the food truck owner and tell him about a local event we have where I think he would do amazing. Hubby and I shared this pie, but I seriously could have eaten a whole one myself.
While there were many amazing food trucks, we had to call our day done because I was so stuffed, hubby was stuffed, and we had a bit of a drive to make it for our evening plans. ( Joan Jett and Heart concert ). Check out all the fun these food trucks brought.
We had so much fun at the Valleyfair Food Truck Festival and I hope Valleyfair brings me back for more amazing fun. We got to ride some coasters, eat a ton of food, and enjoy sunshine and togetherness. Those are 4 of my favorite things. I did have to stop by Bubba’s Fried Chicken truck on the way out and get some chicken tenders and jo-jo’s to go. I needed something for the road. LOL!! I had eaten so much that day that I actually was in a food coma and slept all the way to our next event.
