Why Get A Dexa Scan?
Every day we try to eat right, groove our bodies, and stay healthy by any means possible. Even with doing all the right things, one just can never be totally certain what your body thinks about all you are doing. Is your body reacting to your healthy choices or not?
A Dexa Scan is the only way one can know 100% what their body is responding to or what their body might need to get to the fitness goals one has. Measuring body fat, muscle and bone density with a Dexa Scan can give you a starting point and track your journey all the way.
What is a DEXA Scan?
If you are like me you might be asking yourself, what is a DEXA Scan? I am so glad I learned and was given the chance to have one. A DEXA Scan is a device that measures your body fat, muscle and bone density for an overall assessment of your body composition.
Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptionmetry is what DEXA stands for. Using 2 different types of waves that are reflected by lean muscle, and bone differently. Using the information the scanner finds it creates a detailed map of your body to give you the in on your body composition.
Wanting to know what your body composition is? Getting a DEXA Scan will help you see exactly how much body fat and muscle you have and where. Whether you are a fitness enthusiast, are on a special diet or are an athlete this helps you track your progress accurately as you work through any program or healthy living journey in your life.
As people age our bone density lessens. Sad, but a fact of life. No matter what you do, you can’t stop the aging process. You can however slow it down with proper nutrition and exercise. A DEXA Scan can help identify if you are at a high risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.
Getting a DEXA Scan will help your physican know what is up and get you on a path to help proactively treat any problems.
What to Expect
The scan is very fast and so you can be in and out in no time. Wearing less clothing is better, and not eating right before. First they weigh you, then you lay on the table, get positioned correctly, feet strapped to hold them still and the machine will flow over you measuring you fast and totally pain free.
Results you will see are total body bone mineral density, total body muscle mass, total body fat mass, total body bone mass, total body fat percentage, muscle and fat mass in trunk, arms, legs and overall.
Scan takes maybe 15 min in total, and then you get a one on one with your technician to run you through the results.
I was excited to give this a try as I do try my best to eat healthy, and groove my body. Living with Fibromyalgia it isn’t always easy so knowing where I am at in this stage of my life was something I found really interesting.
I was actually very surprised by my results. You can see my images below showing my bone density, my body fat and all my stats. I thought my body fat might be around 21 and so I was happy to learn it’s lower than I thought. And my bone density is great for a woman in her upper 40’s. (47 as of now).
The DEXAFit App is a great tool to have on your smartphone to keep track of your progress. Tracking your sleep, mood, exercise, water, food, and more.
