Sheild Them Everywhere ~ Protecting Kids Health and Wellness by Helping Your Kids Eat Healthy
Bad food is everywhere these days. Most of it we as parents know about,
but there are those foods that have hidden or not noticed ingredients that are
not always good for kids, or us. Knowing how and what to feed our kids is huge these days.
They are not always aware of what is good and what is bad for them. And, with all
the commercials trying to entice our kids to eat at fast food restaurants, buy candy
and snacks, and eat unhealthy it is totally up to us as parents to find things that they
want to eat even if that means a bit more work for us to make things look appealing that
our kids might not want to try.
Here are some fun and easy ways to get our kids to eat healthier.
1) Make Food Fun ~ for instance ~
Ants on a Log ~ Celery with peanut butter on it. Maybe add some raisins to the top of it.
Banana Octopus ~ Take a banana and peel it back half way and cut the peel into strips to look like legs. Break off half the banana so it will sit, save the half for yourself or them. Poke a toothpick into the banana peel and move around a bit to make eye holes.
Cornucopia Pocket ~ Use 1/2 a tortilla wrap and fill it with things like carrots, snap peas, green beans, pickles, grapes, fruit, etc. Wrap the tortilla up to look like a cornucopia.
Sandwich on a Stick ~ Take their favorite lunch mean, cheese, pickles, olives, tomatoes, lettuce, etc.. and slide it all onto a kabob. Of course cut it in small pieces to fit.
Fruit Smoothies ~ Take any kind of fruit and blend with a juice and ice. (100% juice).
Moose Munch Mix ~ Take any kinds of nuts, dried fruit, granola, and even a small amount of m&m’s and mix all together.
Meat Roll Up ~ Lunch meat, a small amount of cream cheese and a pickle slice…roll and wallah.
The list can go on and on, but I am sure you get the picture. If you make food fun, they will try it. Sometimes hiding something they might not like because of the look of it into something they do like helps them start to like new things. You can search online for many more fun ideas.
2) Let Kids Help Cook ~
Letting kids help you in the kitchen starts them on the right track to knowing more about food and how to combine certain things to make tasty treats and meals. I believe kids are very creative and they might just surprise you in the kitchen. Sometimes, to get kids to try something they might not like you might have to try one of their creations. Never know.. it might be good 🙂
3) Bring Kids Shopping ~
Kids of course love to shop and I totally understand how stressful it can be to have the kids with. But, if you sit down before you go shopping, do your list and get your coupons ready you can make it a fun trip as well as a learning experience. Tell the kids that they each have to find certain items, and that those items are for certain meals you will be making. If you let each kid pick out a meal for the week and they are in charge of finding the ingredients for that meal it makes them feel important and involved. And, this is a great building block for kids.
4) Be a Role Model ~
This of course is the most important. Kids do as they see Mom and Dad do. So, if you are sitting at home scarfing that bag of chips, what will they do.. the same thing. We need to make smart choices to teach them how to make smart choices. So, keep in mind they do as they see.
5) Play food games with the kids. Like, what is a fruit, what is a vegetable, where did this food item come from, etc. Maybe even blindfold your kids and place out certain foods and have them feel them and guess what they are. Or taste them and guess what they are.
6) Keep the House Free of Yuck ~
Keeping all the bad stuff out of your house is also a good idea. Yeah, we all have a few things here and there but the thing to keep in mind is that if it is there, it will get eaten. So, instead of a cupboard full of sugary candy, salty/greasy chips, and sugary drinks swap that all out for a fridge full of fruit, yogurt, 100% juice, veggies, etc.
There are many things we as parents can do to help protect our kids health and wellness and helping them eat healthy is a perfect start to a long, happy and healthy life for them. Helping kids learn about healthy foods and how to make the right food choices is our job. Also, helping kids understand how important it is to keep their hands washed and also wash their fruit and veggies before eating them. Kids are not aware of germs and pesticides and other chemicals which might be on foods and on things they touch. Sending a hand sanitizer to school with kids for their desk/locker is a good idea. It starts them on the track to protecting their health and wellness.
