Stop and think before slipping your money into the slot on that vending machine. Are you hungry, or are you bored? Maybe you are feeding yourself for lunch because you forgot to bring one from home? Or are you pressed for time and need something to tie you over till your next meal? There are many reasons why we hit the vending machines and I am guessing most of the time you slip that money in the slot, out comes something that isn’t the best choice for your snack needs.
Vending machines used to be filled with nothing good, and all bad. Candy bars, chips, gum, etc. But, my husband just informed me that at his place of work the vending machines have started to offer healthier choices. And, he said the healthier choices in the machines at his work are actually cheaper than the non healthy choices. That is not usually the case but I am very pleased to hear that at his work it is the case. When a bag of almonds would normally be $1 or more but a bag of chips would be .50 most would go for 2 bags of chips thinking they are getting more. Well, you are getting more… more bad crap!! LOL!
I thought I would share with you my vending machine tips for smarter snack choices. This of course is just something for you in case you forget your really healthy, home packed lunch and snacks. Because that is the best route to go, but I know from time to time we all have to hit those darn vending machines.
Almonds, or a mixture of nuts and fruit. That is your best pick as nuts have many benefits like filling you up, gives you a source of protein, and they taste great. Granola bars, of any kind are a way better choice than a bag of chips. Ones with peanuts, peanut butter, or other nuts and that gives you protein which is slow to digest to help keep you feel full longer. Plain popcorn, or rice cakes is another alternative to chips or candy. Something that has whole grain or fiber. Enjoy with a large glass of water to help fill you up. Pretzels can be another good pick. They are crunchy, take a while to eat and do fill you up. Plus you might feel a little naughty due to the salt. If you do have a hankering for chips, some machines have the Sun Chips or even a healthier chip like ones that are baked.
If it is a sweet tooth you have and you just want that chocolate then I suggest either a snickers bar or peanut M&M’s as they have nuts for your protein and to fill you up, and you will also get your sweet tooth fix.
I am happy to hear that vending machines are changing. I remember as a kid it was a treat to hit the vending machines, but as I have gotten older and wiser I dread when I have to resort to buying food from a machine. I never leave home without a purse full of healthy snacks, like stuff from my Nature Box monthly subscription. My husband now considers my purse his personal vending machine. I often think to myself that I should stop carrying a purse as it is a pain sometimes, but then where would I carry all my snacks. Maybe I should put a coin slot on it for when my husband wants a snack! LOL! We even take our own snacks to the movies. Not sure if that is allowed, but I will not sit and eat all that crap they sell there. Yes, I like my buttered popcorn, but it is so expensive and so bad for you!
What is your go to snack at a vending machine? Do you have vending machines where you work and have they started to add healthier choices?
