It is never possible for your dog to suddenly fall sick. There are always some tells that exhibit health problems in dogs. Regularly examining your dog’s facial features is the most valuable pet health advice you need to adhere to.
Eyes
With older dogs, regular eye check-ups are very necessary. Taking your dog to a vet to get their eye tested is necessary if they show signs of limited sight. Your dog not being able to spot their toys or bumping into things can be a sign of eyesight problems.
Excessive watering of the eyes can be symptomatic of multiple eye issues. You may also notice your dog’s nictitating membrane starting to protrude, this can lead to cherry eye in younger dogs. Once you notice anything out of place with your dog’s eyes schedule a vet visit immediately.
Nose
The concept of a hot and dry dog nose as a sign of sickness has been proven false. Yet examining the nose is a necessary part of a regular health check. While most dog noses are usually wet, your dog having an unnaturally wet nose is a sign of sickness. Having engaged in physical activities if your dog’s nose gets dry then it may be a sign of dehydration.
Ears
As we all know, a dog’s sense of hearing is far more heightened than our own. Even the smallest damage to the ears can have a huge impact. Ears are also common spots for fleas and ticks to hide. Shaking of the head can be a sign of ear irritation. Softly handle your dog’s ear and take a look inside to see if it is healthy. Any kind of puss or wax accumulation should be dealt with by a professional.
Gums
Pink gums show overall health in your dog. Any kind of discolouration of the gum is symptomatic of nutritional or digestive issues that your dog may be having. You can slightly lift your dog’s gum while they sleep if they do not allow you to check their gums while they are awake.
Teeth
Any kind of teeth problem in your dog may become life-threatening. After playtime gives your dog’s teeth a check. Plaque formation can be dealt with easily at the vet. A healthy diet should keep their teeth safe. But regular teeth cleanings help.
Tongue
Swelling of the tongue or the colour of the tongue can be indicative of health problems. A swollen tongue indicates allergic reactions. Blue or purple tongue can indicate blood circulation problems unless you own a Chow Chow.
Whiskers
Many people opt to trim their dog’s whiskers without realising it works as a kind of sixth sense for the dog. A healthy growth of whiskers can help your dog stay well oriented.
Before you do start examining your pet, make sure they are used to being examined. Do not forcefully examine a dog’s face. Get your dog relaxed and then conduct the regular checks. If you start checking your dog regularly they will also get used to the concept of it.
Thanks for sharing this useful information about dog health. My two passed all the checks. Hopefully, it will stay that way. They are healthy, active and crazy. Even the 10 year old. lol 🙂
Regular visits provide an opportunity for you to discuss pet care issues such as diet, exercise, vaccinations, medications, etc. with your vet to stay on top of your pet’s care.
Great tips for keeping an eye on your pup’s health at home. Checking teeth and gums regularly is crucial as dental disease is so common in dogs. Thanks for the list.
