If you’re like many people, the quest to be in shape comes with fitness obstacles. And, as if the quest to be fit isn’t hard enough, often we have other obstacles to overcome: health issues, time management, mustering up courage or energy. Even if you already work at staying in shape, you find there are always new obstacles to break through. So, how do you put all of this into perspective? Let’s find out!
Overcoming Fitness Obstacles
Tom Turner, executive liaison for the Spina Bifida Association shared his view of overcoming. It’s about perspective. And, there’s no mountain too high to climb. Tom would know. Paralyzed from the waist down since birth, he trains about three times a week. In fact, he believes he just couldn’t get along without exercise.
So, in this quest on overcoming obstacles in fitness 3 basic principles help break-down fears and intimidations. They help you to reach your fitness goals.
Lesson #1 Move Into The Fear.
Train your mind to believe no mountain is too high or any goal is too difficult to attain. It’s about meeting your fears and facing them head-on. In this principle, recognize your fears, acknowledge them and then move through them. Ask yourself, “what is it that makes you uncomfortable?” Have you let yourself get out of shape and are afraid you’ll never get back? Has an injury caused you to be afraid of your body? Practice visualizing creatively. And, you can put your fears in check. See yourself as you’d like to be.
Lesson #2 Trust Your Intuition.
In order for you to overcome obstacles and learn to break through barriers, you need to listen to the still small voice of your body. Sometimes we desire the comfort of having someone tell us what we can and cannot do. However, our highest truths can be found found in our own hearts. This doesn’t mean a good opinion of others isn’t important, but ultimately the decision is from within you.
When you face an obstacle consider how you feel. What do your instincts tell you? Often it is simply your instinct that will move you into a new mindset and raise your consciousness. For example, Tom Turner wasn’t about to let the wheelchair stand in his way. He had to merely change his perspective about it. First, he learned about what his restrictions were then, create a boundary for himself.
After that, he aimed to meet those boundaries. He would first reach as high as he can within the confines of what he’s able to do. Whether it be more sets, reps or greater endurance, he allowed himself as much time as necessary to accomplish small goals. And, these small goals helped him to reach big goals.

Lesson #3 Do Not Let Fear Control Your Life
What about fear? You can probably have a number of fears all at once. Some are real and other not. Ton experienced 19 operations in his life. But, he’s come understand how to deal with his fears. He says. “It really comes down to our most primal fear; fear of death. Once you realize that death is all part of the divine plan, it’s liberating, you can let it go and, instead, choose how to live. So instead of being afraid of death I decided to choose how to live.”
So what’s the takeaway message? Staying afraid often keeps us from truly living. Life is all about attitude. What fears are getting in your way? Make today the right time to face them.
